Персонаж комикса [ comic strip], созданный в 1940 У. Келли [ Kelly, Walter Crawford (Walt)] - "разумное, терпеливое, сердечное, наивное, дружелюбное существо, каким мы все сами себе кажемся". Пого и его друзья - аллигатор Элберт [Albert], курящий сигары, кокетливая черепаха Шерши Лафамм [Cherchy La Femme] и другие - жили в болоте Окифеноки и изо дня в день обсуждали насущные проблемы. Некоторые из персонажей весьма напоминали известные в стране личности. В 1952 в ходе президентской избирательной кампании Пого "выступил" по телевидению против Д. Эйзенхауэра и Э. Стивенсона [ Eisenhower, Dwight David (Ike); Stevenson, Adlai Ewing II] с лозунгом "А я за Пого" ["I go Pogo"]. Знаменитой фразой стало "высказывание" Пого во время войны во Вьетнаме [ Vietnam War]: "Мы встретили врага, и он в нас самих" ["We have met the enemy and he is us"]. -

(1785-1819) Перри, Оливер ХэзардВоенно-морской офицер, герой англо-американской войны 1812-14 [ War of 1812], коммодор [ Commodore], брат М. К. Перри [ Perry, Matthew Calbraith]. Собрав флотилию из девяти кораблей в г. Эри, шт. Пенсильвания, 10 сентября 1813 разбил британские силы (шесть кораблей) в заливе Пут-ин-Бей [Put-in-Bay] в штате Огайо в ходе сражения за озеро Эри [ Erie, Lake]. На флаге Перри было написано: "Корабль не сдавать!" [ Don't give up the ship]. После победы он произнес ставшую знаменитой фразу: "Мы встретились с врагом, и он у нас в руках" ["We have met the enemy and they are ours"]. Победа над англичанами [Perry's Victory] стала одним из поворотных пунктов войны. Умер в Тринидаде от желтой лихорадки. Ныне его флагманский корабль "Ниагара" [U.S.S.
